Water Security

Location of Intervention: Jawhar & Mokhada (Palghar District), Maharashtra

Water fuels every aspect of life. It’s essential for basic health and hygiene, and it drives society’s most essential industries: agriculture, energy and transportation. Water security is essential to stability of any community or country. With climate variability comes fluctuating rainfall patterns and extreme temperatures, creating shorter rainy seasons and longer dry seasons. These shifts severely impact lives and livelihoods. Decreased water supplies mean more human suffering and increased risk of instability, violent conflict and migration. Often the areas most deeply affected by environmental changes are already impoverished and lack the resources necessary for sound water management.

Raah's model of Water Security involves the following:

  • Availability of water (for all needs)

  • Ease of access to water (for all needs)

  • Quality of water (drinking)

How do we work?

Catch every drop when it falls and where it falls.

We enhance the rainwater harvesting capacity of the village through different structures to augment the supply side of water and on demand side create a village level water management committee to regulate water usage.

Our priority is to take a nature-based approach and focus on improving and enhancing the capacity of the existing sources.

We use a scientific approach and use hydrogeology extensively to understand and map the area and build sustainable solutions based on the findings.
